Can my child play on a team?
Absolutely! If you’re near Flex Academy, your child can join any team or sport we offer.
For students in other areas, you can contact a local school and inquire about joining their team. Keep in mind that not all schools accept online students for team sports.
To participate, students must:
- Be registered with BC School Sports and in Grades 8-12 (this can be completed by the HCOS Athletic Coordinator).
- Be enrolled in at least 62.5% of a full course load (5 courses per school year) at their primary school.
- The HCOS’ Athletic Director and the receiving school’s administration must complete the Online Learning Alternate School Form.
Important: Once you choose a brick-and-mortar school, it becomes your home school for sports (for grades 9+).
Can I play individualized sports?
Yes! Individual sports like Track & Field, Gymnastics, Swimming, Cross Country, Mountain Biking, and more are open to Distance Learners, but participation works differently than team sports.
As a student or family entering a sport, you are responsible for all fees and management. Many events require a coach for registration, which can often be a parent.
In some cases, a student may be able to train with another school and work with their coach, but they will still be officially registered under HCOS.
You must also be registered with BC School Sports. Please connect with the HCOS Athletic Director to ensure you meet all requirements.
I am a registered student, not enrolled. What do I do?
Unfortunately, to participate in sports, including any BC School Sports programs, you must be enrolled as a student.
If you need help with enrollment, please reach out to our team for guidance!

What is E-Sports?
E-Sports (Electronic Sports) is competitive, organized video gaming, where players and teams compete in various games at local, national, and international levels. Popular titles include Rocket League, NBA2K, and FIFA, among others.
E-Sports promotes teamwork, strategy, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills while offering opportunities for scholarships and professional careers. E-Sports is great to connect with other Flex and HCOS students.

What does HCOS provide for sports?
HCOS does not offer specific team sports, but we serve as a support system to encourage and endorse students in their athletic pursuits.
While it is the family’s responsibility to find sports opportunities, HCOS helps by endorsing eligibility and assisting with BC School Sports registration when required.
Additionally, we are working to develop internal intramural programs for HCOS students to compete and stay active.
Do I need to pay to join campus school sports?
Yes, most schools have athletic fees for team sports. These fees vary by school and typically cover costs like uniforms, league fees, travel, and equipment. If you are joining a brick-and-mortar school team, check with that school for specific costs.
For individual sports under HCOS, families are responsible for all entry fees, competition costs, and related expenses.
HCOS does not cover these fees, so participation costs are the responsibility of the family.
